On The Topic Of Fake News

As a Social Studies teacher, I can confidently say that teaching digital literacy in my subject area is crucial to what I teach. Within the Social Sciences, fake news is the number one issue that all research has to deal with. The news however, does not need to be fake, but instead it just needs to be misleading. Things can be completely true, yet they are presented in a way that is purposefully meant to confuse and upset people.

Here are some examples of this:

This video is the perfect example at how people are able to use some technically correct statements to push an agenda. Despite how much this video seems like an Onion skit, it is very real. It is up to us as teacher to teach children that even if they see a "debate" such as this being funded by a large corporation, this does not mean that it is correct.

While this is not fake news, another example is the idea that if someone has a degree, they automatically should be trusted. This concept is mainly found in older generations however there is still a need to educate students that just because someone has a title, it does not mean that everything they say should be trusted. I want to use a great speech by Stan Lee to push this point. Even though someone with a title told him his ideas were bad, he decided to push through. This same idea is reflected within dictator states as well. Just because someone has a title, it does not mean that they are exempt from lying to you.

When it comes to how the Social Studies curriculum makes ties to this, the Social 9 curriculum does a great job covering it. With unrenewed curriculum, honestly I don't know... I do not have 3 hours to read this behemoth mess for this response so I will focus on the Social 9 curriculum. There are several outcomes that can be used to create interesting classes around the concept of fake news. Outcome DR9.1 e. "Investigate the role of literature, visual arts, music, newspapers, photographs, and other artifacts in obtaining information about past societies." is a perfect example of this. This outcome and indicator present opportunities for the class to look directly at fake news and come to conclusions to see how it affects societies.

How I would incorporate the goals of the NCTE framework is to incorporate it within my lessons. Things like the use of laptops to make research papers and the use of phones to organize lessons.
